Upcoming dates : Apr 17, May 1, May 15, May 29, June 12 Just Transition All Candidates Town Hall The Youth Climate Corps Campaign, Neighbours United Defend Our Island Team, Mercy Center for Ecology and Justice, Fridays for Future St John's, along with supporters and friends invite you to join us for an All Candidates Town Hall on the theme of a Just Transition ! Location: Foran-Greene Room, St. John's City Hall, 10 New Gower, St. John's and online - all registrants will receive a virtual invite. Date: Tuesday April 22nd Time: 7:00 - 9:30 PM NDT or 6:30 - 9:00 PM ADT The purpose of this gathering is to bring all potential federal, provincial, and municipal election candidates, young people, and the general public together to engage on issues of a Just Transition away from fossil fuels, and the vision for a Youth Climate Corps as part of a bold new climate action plan, empowering young people to help their communities face the impacts of climate crises. We invite anyone considering or intending to run in the upcoming federal, provincial, and municipal elections to avail of this important opportunity to engage with constituents. Young people across so-called Canada are urging the government to invest $1 billion in Budget 2025 , creating 20,000 full-time Youth Climate Corps positions at a $25/hour living wage to support climate resilience and kickstart a Just Transition . We envision a YCC that would empower young people and communities by providing a federal jobs guarantee for anyone 35 and under . We envision a program that would turn no one away and place young people in 2 year work training placements doing well paid, dignified local climate work, rooted in justice and led by Indigenous nations and municipalities. We'll have a few snacks but feel welcome to bring something to share if you'd like - no obligation to do so! Call for Volunteers for the SJC Audit Team As part of our commitment to accountability and transparency , the SJCNL is inviting three members to open our books and do a deep dive into our finances . The Audit Team  will play a pivotal role in our organization’s ability to operate next year  and adds an  important layer of trust  in our pursuit for a Revolution of Care ! As a team member, you will review our treasurer’s reports, bank statements, and financial oversight policies  to ensure accuracy and compliance. This project is expected to take 20 hours  and must be completed for the Annual General Meeting that is tentatively set for September 2025 . We encourage members of all levels of experience  and knowledge to sign up. We will onboard you and trust that every member of our organization has the ability to perform this financial review. UPDATE: First Workshop Scheduled Financial Empowerment Workshop #1   Tues, March 18 7-8pm NT On Zoom: Email SocialJusticeCoopNL@gmail.com for the invite To strengthen our collective financial literacy and foundational movement building, the SJCNL’s Financial Oversight Committee is kick-starting a series of Financial Empowerment Workshops!  We will be starting with a deep review of the Treasurer’s report and Audit Team report that was presented at the last Annual General Meeting as a practical example to develop our understanding and learn what further learning is needed. PREVIOUS POST: Since the SJCNL reported an internal theft to our community in 2022, we have been committed to a deep review of our financial oversight policies. As part of that process, we have heard from members that they don’t feel fully comfortable assessing whether the financial reports presented are following all legal and internal guidelines. In response to this feedback, the SJCNL’s Financial Oversight Committee is kick-starting a series of Financial Empowerment Workshops! These workshops will be an iterative process to develop strong financial literacy and ensure that our members can hold the organization accountable to its policies. We will be starting with a deep review of the Treasurer’s report and Audit Team report that was presented at the last Annual General Meeting as a practical example to develop our understanding and learn what further education our members need. We encourage our members, volunteers, and allies of all levels of experience and knowledge to sign up for these workshops! We know there is a wealth of knowledge in this community that will be key for mentorship and engagement. The Challenge Car Culture team at the Social Justice Co-op invites you to walk the St. John's Pedestrian Mall area on Monday, February 3rd at 3pm . Meeting location is the front of Atlantic place . A special edition of our monthly team meeting, this time around we'll walk the area that makes up the Pedestrian Mall in the summertime. We'll chat about accessibility barriers and make some notes to be used in further analyses, letters, writings, etc. We hope to use this information to encourage a more accessible and inclusive experience this summer. Everyday under colonial, racial, capitalism, we witness unspeakable horrors. Over the past year & a half we've witnessed the horror of the state of Israel's genocide against the Palestinian people, propped up by our own government. It's necessary to hold our grief in collectivity. You are invited to join us for a Grief Circle for Palestine and Lebanon. This is an invitation to join us in a safe space where we can honour and hold our grief in community. All are welcome. The AxA Book Club will start Wretched of the Earth on Monday, Jan 20 from 7:00 to 8:00pm NST (6:30 - 7:30pm AST / 5:30 - 6:30pm EST)  We are expecting a higher turnout than usual, so we may extend the meeting until 8:30pm NST. We will aim to meet every 2nd Monday from 7 to 8pm NST to discuss about 50 pages of the book until it is finished. Reading Material:  We will be starting with the foreword by Homi K. Bhaba and the preface by Jean-Paul Sartre (pg. vi to lxii), which is almost 50 pages. Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries have the book in physical, electronic, and audiobook formats. Spotify premium allows you to listen to 15 hours of audiobooks for free per month (which includes The Wretched of the Earth).  Physical copies should be available for purchase at Downtown Comics hopefully this week!
